How to Identify a Houseplant From a Photo (and Actually Get It Right)

The short version:photograph the top side of one mature leaf in indirect daylight, let it fill most of the frame, run it through an identifier app, and then spend thirty seconds verifying the answer against two or three physical features. 1. Photograph the leaf, not the vibe

- Shoot the top side of a mature leaf. Juvenile foliage often looks nothing like the adult form (young Monstera leaves have no holes at all), and the underside hides the vein pattern that distinguishes close relatives.
- Fill about 80% of the frame. Get close, tap to focus, and hold still. A sharp leaf against a blurry background beats a sharp room with a small leaf in it.
- Use indirect daylight. Flash flattens the surface texture and blows out the veining; harsh sun casts shadows that read as false edges. Near a window on a bright day is ideal.
- Include the petiole if you can — the small stem attaching leaf to plant. How a leaf joins its stem separates several species that have nearly identical blades.
2. One plant per frame
The most common cause of a confidently wrong answer isn’t a bad model — it’s a pothos vine draped over a dracaena with a fern photobombing from the left. The recognizer locks onto whichever foliage dominates the frame, and on a crowded shelf that may not be the plant you meant. If your plants live close together, gently hold one leaf away from the crowd or slide the pot out for its portrait.
3. Verify like a botanist (the 30-second check)
When the result comes back, don’t stop at the common name. Pull up the species the app suggests and compare three things against the plant in front of you:
- Leaf margin — the edge. Smooth, toothed, lobed, or split? Margins are highly consistent within a species.
- Vein pattern — parallel lines (like a spider plant), a central rib with branching side veins, or a net-like mesh?
- Growth habit — does it vine, clump, or grow from a single upright stem? A trailing plant identified as a tree-form species is a red flag no matter how similar one leaf looks.
And check the Latin name, not just the common one. Common names overlap wildly — at least three unrelated species are sold as “money plant” — while a binomial like Epipremnum aureum points to exactly one plant with exactly one set of care needs.
The lookalikes that fool everyone

Does plant ID need the cloud? No — and that matters
